As you may have noticed one of the biggest challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic is that we simply don’t know yet what works against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. According to the research published at the JAMA Network – Journal of American Medical Association, on August 17, 2020 by M. Emmanuel Bhaskar, MD, the use of face shields may have reduced the number of infected health workers and healthcare volunteers that were taken care of infected patients. This specific test paper is describing transmission results in a community setting before and after the use of face shields.
Face shields have been proposed to prevent transmission in the communities and also is a standard among the healthcare providers, not only in case of COVID-19 pandemics but way before. There is a research done on face shield efficiency in a test against the influenza virus from 2014. In that test, a face shield reduced influenza exposure by 96% during the period immediately after a cough, and the study is published in the National Library of Medicine with detailed test schematics.
Because collected data is still small in the case of COVID-19, this topic keeps coming back. Small and large focus groups and field tests are independently run across the world, and results are published in the form of studies in major medical journals continuously.
